Aftercare & Cleaning Guide
Proper aftercare extends the life, appearance, and performance of Outdoor Living Foundations finishes. Each material type requires specific cleaning and maintenance practices.Natural Stone Slabs
Routine Cleaning: Wipe with pH-neutral stone cleaner or mild soap and water.
Avoid: Acidic or abrasive cleaners that can etch surfaces.
Sealing: Reseal every 1–2 years (or as manufacturer recommends) to maintain stain resistance.
Stains: Use poultice formulated for stone to lift oils or organic marks.
Stone Veneers
Routine Cleaning: Rinse with water; scrub gently with a soft-bristle brush.
Avoid: Pressure washing at close range or harsh chemicals that may damage mortar joints.
Repairs: Inspect for loose joints or mortar cracks and patch as needed.
Sealing: Optional, depending on exposure; use breathable masonry sealer.
Wood Finishes
Routine Cleaning: Use soft cloth with mild soap and water.
Avoid: Bleach, harsh solvents, or pressure washing.
Oiling/Sealing: Apply exterior oil or sealer annually (cedar, teak, ipe). Thermally modified woods may need less frequent treatment.
Inspection: Check for splitting or weathering; sand lightly and refinish as needed.
Shou Sugi Ban: Use soft brush; avoid aggressive cleaning that strips char layer.
Concrete Finishes
Routine Cleaning: Sweep debris, then clean with mild detergent and warm water.
Avoid: Strong acids, de-icing salts, or wire brushes that may erode surface.
Sealing: Apply concrete sealer every 1–2 years to prevent stains and moisture intrusion.
Stains: Spot clean with baking soda paste or pH-balanced cleaner.
Tile Finishes
Routine Cleaning: Use non-abrasive tile cleaner or diluted vinegar solution (for ceramic/porcelain).
Avoid: Harsh acids on natural stone tiles.
Grout Care: Clean with soft brush and re-seal grout lines annually to prevent staining.
Glass Tile: Wipe with glass cleaner for streak-free finish.
Mosaic/Small Format: Use soft brush to access joints; avoid steel wool or abrasive pads.
Metal Finishes
Stainless Steel: Clean with stainless cleaner or soapy water; wipe along the grain. Avoid steel wool (causes rusting).
Powder-Coated Aluminum: Wipe with mild detergent; rinse thoroughly; re-touch chips to prevent corrosion.
Galvanized Steel: Clean with warm water and mild soap; avoid acid-based cleaners.
Copper/Bronze: For natural patina, clean gently with water only. For polished look, use copper/bronze cleaner and reapply protective wax.
Blackened Steel: Dust and clean with damp cloth; apply clear wax or oil to maintain finish and resist corrosion.
